SANZALA TRAVELS RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL POLICY

As a travel agency operating in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), we recognize our responsibility to promote sustainable tourism practices that protect the islands' natural environment, support local communities, and preserve cultural heritage. This sustainable travel policy outlines our commitment to sustainable development and responsible tourism management.

International tourism is one of the main sectors that supports STP, either directly or indirectly. As Sanzala Travels, we believe in minimising negative impacts, whether social, economic or environmental, and work to optimise the benefits that tourism can bring to the country and its people.

As a local tour operator, we want to give our clients the opportunity to learn about the country's history, discover its unique culture, explore its incredible landscapes and meet its people while conducting our tours in a responsible and sustainable way. Our aim is to respect the local culture and the islands' environment in all the communities and regions we visit. We encourage all our staff and tour guides to promote responsible and sustainable tourism while working and travelling with our clients.

Our objectives and working guidelines are as follows.

OBJECTIVES

  • Promote sustainable tourism practices among our clients.

  • Support local communities and businesses through responsible tourism initiatives.

  • Minimize the environmental impact of our operations and the activities we promote.

  • Respect and preserve the cultural heritage of STP.

  • Provide memorable and enriching experiences for travelers while ensuring the long-term sustainability of tourism in the region.

KEY PRINCIPLES

Environmental Stewardship: We are committed to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations by promoting eco-friendly transportation, accommodation, and activities. We prioritize partnerships with suppliers who share our commitment to environmental conservation.

Community Engagement: We actively engage with local communities to ensure that tourism benefits are distributed equitably and contribute to socio-economic development. We support community-based tourism initiatives that empower local residents and preserve cultural traditions.

Cultural Preservation: We respect and promote the cultural heritage of STP by offering authentic cultural experiences and supporting local artisans and cultural events. We educate our clients about local customs, traditions, and etiquette to promote cultural sensitivity and respect.

Education and Awareness: We raise awareness among our clients about the importance of sustainable travel practices and provide information about environmental and cultural conservation efforts in STP. We encourage our clients to minimize their environmental footprint and respect local communities and ecosystems during their travels.

Continuous Improvement: We continuously evaluate and improve our sustainability performance by monitoring our environmental and social impacts, seeking feedback from stakeholders, and implementing best practices in sustainable tourism management.

POLICY GUIDELINES

Product Selection: We prioritize partnerships with suppliers who adhere to sustainable tourism practices, including eco-friendly accommodations, responsible tour operators, and locally owned businesses. We offer a diverse range of sustainable travel experiences that showcase the natural beauty, cultural richness, and biodiversity of STP. We frequently use ‘casas particulares’ (locally owned holiday apartments) on our trips, which produce far less waste than large hotels and consume much less energy.

Client Education: We provide comprehensive information to our clients about sustainable travel practices, including tips for reducing waste, conserving energy and water, supporting local communities, and respecting cultural norms. We encourage our clients to choose sustainable options when booking their trips and to participate in responsible tourism activities during their stay. In addition, we encourage travelling in small groups of no more than 20 participants, which we believe reduces the negative impact on communities and nature. Due to the poor quality of drinking water in STP, we have to buy bottled water for our customers to avoid health risks. However, to combat the use of single-use plastic, we encourage our customers to bring their own water bottles with in-built filters to reduce the amount of bottled water we have to buy. We also encourage our customers to reuse their towels and to remember to switch off the lights and air conditioning when they leave their apartment.

We make visitors aware of local customs and sensitivities to ensure no unintentional offence is caused. Before travelling, we inform our customers about the country and give them tips for responsible travel in partner countries. We endeavour to design all our trips to promote a positive cultural exchange between our clients and STP locals that fosters mutual learning and respect.  This creates an authentic and enriching experience for both our clients and the locals.

Community Partnerships: We collaborate with local communities and non-profit organizations to develop sustainable tourism initiatives that benefit both residents and visitors. We prioritize community-based tourism projects that empower local entrepreneurs, preserve cultural heritage, and support environmental conservation efforts. We make sure that we recycle as much as possible and dispose of waste responsibly. What we recycle, we pass on to a recycling co-operative whose aim is to generate income from products made from waste materials. We encourage the support of local artisans. There are many small artisans in STP where visitors can buy a variety of souvenirs to support local handicrafts. We advise our customers not to buy jewellery and other items made illegally from endangered species such as turtle shells or other illegal materials.

Environmental Conservation: We support conservation projects and initiatives aimed at protecting STP's unique ecosystems, including rainforests, beaches, and marine habitats. We advocate for responsible tourism practices that minimize habitat destruction, pollution, and wildlife disturbance. We promote cycling, trekking and kayaking tours, all of which are carbon-free apart from the bus transfers. We stick to the hiking trails to avoid damage to plants and disturbance to wildlife. When swimming, we ask visitors not to touch or get too close to animals, coral reefs and fish. All our activity and cultural tours visit at least one national park (Obô) or biosphere reserve to promote understanding of the local environment.  The visits also generate income through entrance fees and support the local rural economy. We ask our clients to respect the signage, only take photos and not to pick plants or remove stones or other natural elements as souvenirs of the place.

Employee Training: We provide training and education opportunities for our staff to increase their awareness of sustainability issues and enhance their skills in sustainable tourism management, customer service, and cultural sensitivity. We empower our employees to act as ambassadors for sustainable travel and to promote responsible tourism practices among our clients. Our tour guides are all STP graduates with very different educational backgrounds, but with the same passion for STP culture, nature and the infectious warmth for which STP residents are famous.

CONCLUSIONS

By implementing this sustainable travel policy, Sanzala Travels aims to promote tourism that respects the environment, supports local communities, and preserves cultural heritage. We regularly evaluate our policy and value the feedback we receive from our customers. In this way, we keep up to date with new developments and ensure that we apply the best practices. Together with our clients, partners and stakeholders, we are committed to creating positive and lasting impacts that contribute to the long-term sustainability and well-being of the incredible islands of São Tomé and Príncipe.
